Kampong Ayer

"Kampong Ayer" also known as the Water Village is situated in the capital city of Brunei Darussalam, Bandar Seri Begawan. Brunei's water village is well known as the largest in the world as the inhabitants consists of about 39,000 people which is about 10% of Brunei's total population.

People have been living in Kampong Ayer over 1300 years ago and Antonio Pigafetta labelled it as the "Venice of the East".

Even though far away, it looks like its just made up of stilts and wooden planks, however, the interior of the houses are made up of modern amenities such as air conditioning, satellite television, internet access, electricity and plumbing. The water village also consists of all the facilities needed by the residents such as hospitals, mosques, schools, restaurants and shops. Tourists would be able to see all these facilities by just  cruising around the neighborhood of Kampong Ayer.

In times of modernization, Brunei's Kampong Ayer tries to preserve all its cultural heritage. The most unique things that can be observed from Kampong Ayer would be the mode of transportation which is made up of long wooden speed boats known as the water taxis. Tourists may experience a wonderful feeling of splashing water while traveling on it.

Tourists must have Kampong Ayer in the list of places to go in Brunei Darussalam and it would be one in a life time experience for them.
